Ash Wednesday: A Time for Reflection, Renewal, and the Start of Lent

Here in Louisiana, faith and tradition run deep. From our vibrant Mardi Gras celebrations to the solemn beginning of Lent, this time of year is rich with meaning for our Catholic community. Today, as the beads are swept away and the king cakes are set aside, we enter into a season of reflection and renewal—starting with Ash Wednesday.

What is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, a 40-day period (excluding Sundays) leading up to Easter. It is a day of prayer, fasting, and repentance. Catholics around the world attend Mass to receive ashes on their foreheads in the shape of a cross, a powerful reminder of our mortality and need for spiritual renewal. The priest or minister administering the ashes often says, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Why Do We Receive Ashes?

The ashes, made from burned palm branches from the previous year's Palm Sunday, symbolize both our human frailty and our commitment to turning back to God. They are an outward sign of an inward journey—a journey of repentance, sacrifice, and spiritual growth.

The Start of Lent: A Season of Sacrifice and Renewal

Lent is a time of preparation for Easter, encouraging believers to deepen their faith through three key practices:

Here in Louisiana, Catholic traditions are deeply woven into our culture. Many begin Ash Wednesday by attending morning Mass and then enjoying a traditional seafood meal, as meat is avoided on this day and all Fridays during Lent. You’ll likely notice ashes on the foreheads of coworkers, neighbors, and even the servers at your favorite po’boy shop—a visible sign of faith that unites us as a community.
